Our oldest living order of reptiles, the Sea Turtle, emerges from its birth nest a mere two inch hatchling, it's limbs modified into flippers as front oars and rear paddles. The target of many predators from birth, they are born never to see their mothers, completely alone and independent, never to know parental nurturing or guidance.

The people of Cortez and their fellow residents of Manatee County have long been successful in their efforts to preserve the County's history and to save undeveloped land for public use. The Cortez Village Historical Society works to educate residents and visitors through books and other special events.
